What exactly is Neurofeedback?
Our brainwaves determine how we feel, interact with others, how we sleep, and how organized we are.
Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback helps “rewire’ the physiological responses of these brainwaves, improving your cognitive or emotional health. Think of it as a kind of “exercise for the brain.” It uses real-time displays of brain activity—most commonly electroencephalography (EEG)—to help train your brainwaves, helping you feel more in control of your self regulation and
responses to situations.
There are 5 main types of brainwaves:
Delta waves are experienced in the deepest, most restful stages of sleep.
Theta waves are experienced in the deepest, most restful stages of sleep.
Alpha waves are experienced in the deepest, most restful stages of sleep.
Beta waves are experienced in the deepest, most restful stages of sleep.
Gamma waves are experienced in the deepest, most restful stages of sleep.
Imagine you’re watching a movie that is being controlled by your brainwaves. When your brain is calm and focused, the movie plays smoothly. But when your thoughts become erratic or distracted, the movie stutters or stops. Over time, your brain learns to keep the movie playing smoothly, which translates to maintaining a calm and focused state in real life. This is essentially what Neurofeedback aims to achieve.

Questions About Neurofeedback
During the first appointment, we will place sensors on your head using a headband or cap. These sensors obtain real-time measurement of your brain waves while you play a video game, watch a movie, or listen to music.
As we observe how your brainwaves are reacting to the stimulus. Based on these observations, we put together a treatment plan specific to your needs and goals.
Over subsequent sessions, we train your brain with the neurofeedback equipment. The goal is to have your brain stay calm and focused regardless of the stimulus provided. Over time your brain learns to do this better, and the results will be evident in your physical life. You should find that you are able to make decisions more confidently, manage anxiety and stress, and feel more peaceful over all.
We repeat the process until your goals are met and you feel better.
Each session is typically 45-50 minutes and completed twice a week. As you reach your goals, we can decrease the frequency of the sessions to a “maintenance mode” level.
Your experience will be as unique as you are, but clients typically notice differences between 10 and 20 sessions and length of treatment depends on the goal but can be generally attained in 25-40 sessions.
You can find a list of our fees here. Often neurofeedback treatments are part of a more comprehensive treatment plan, and in that case we can discuss the investment during a consult call or appointment.
Given that brainwaves are involved in all brain activity and functions, neurofeedback can be used for a wide range of brain-based conditions including:
- Mental health disorders and psychiatric conditions (i.e. PTSD, anxiety, depression, anger management, and bipolar disorder)
- Developmental delays and behavioral disorders (i.e. ADHD/ADD, Autism, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, learning disorders)
- Neurological issues and brain injuries
- Physical or emotional pain
- Sleep issues
- Fatigue
- Eating disorders
- Addiction
- Stress relief
- Peak performance
Neurofeedback is generally considered safe without significant side effects. It is a non-invasive treatment and is considered a form of exercise for the brain. Because of this, the most common side effects are sleepiness, lack of focus, and mild headaches because your brain is working harder than usual to rewire previous programming. Typically these are short-lived and usually resolve within 24-48 hours.
If you experience side-effects, let us know so that we can modify the intensity of the treatment if needed.
Most insurances do not cover neurofeedback. During your consultation call we can help you find out if yours will be covered.
